Weather Guidelines

It seems inevitable, but the warm weather is hitting right as we come back to school. BOHS wants our community to understand that there are guidelines we must follow to track the weather to determine if it is safe to practice or compete. These guidelines come from the state of California and CIF.

Here are the most recent guidelines from CIF if you want to read the entire document. To briefly summarize, we are in category 1 and if the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) goes over 86.2 degrees we are not allowed to continue. The WBGT is not the same as the temperature on your phone or in your car. It takes into account the humidity, wind, and sun angle in addition to the temperature. If you would like to learn more and see some readings, you can visit the National Weather service NOAA website.

BOHS has a wet bulb globe thermometer and we take a reading daily, sometimes several times per day. We also have to work with other schools and district to arrange transportation. Busing kids to another school has a cost, so we prefer to make these decisions earlier in the day to avoid the wasted expense. We also try to postpone events to later in the day, or we move practice to the cooler morning temps.

Here are the guidelines that we follow and the appropriate WBGT readings:

Category 1 WBGT

All of this is being done to keep our students safe and we know we can all support that.
