General Information

The performance and behavior of athletes, both in athletic contests and in life, get close scrutiny in our society. It is important that the behavior of athletes be exemplary because athletes are role models for their peers and representatives of the school to the rest of the world.  We encourage students to participate in as many sports as talent and time allow, and we believe that participation in athletics can be a valuable part of a student's education; however, actual playing time in contests will be determined by coaches.  BOHS is a member of the Century Conference and the California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) and operates 22 athletic programs under the guidelines established by those organizations with certain modifications in eligibility regulations:

Fall:  Cross Country, Football, Girls’ Golf, Girls’ Tennis, Girls’ Volleyball, & Boys’ Water Polo

Winter:  Basketball, Soccer, Girls’ Water Polo, & Wrestling

Spring:  Baseball, Boys’ Golf, Cheer/Pep Squad, Softball, Swimming, Boys’ Tennis, Track & Field, & Boys’ Volleyball

Students and parents must understand that there is risk involved in athletic participation.  A student could incur injury, paralysis, and in extreme cases, death, in the course of athletic participation.  Every precaution and safeguard is taken to ensure student safety, but participants must be warned that risks exist.  Before a student may participate in any athletic activity (including tryouts and conditioning), he or she must submit a completed physical examination statement signed by a physician, a parent consent form, proof of insurance, verification of athletic eligibility, and a completed emergency card. These forms must be turned into the Activities Office for clearance.

If your student's medical clearance expires during the season, your student will no longer be eligible until proof of an updated medical examination is provided to the school.  Therefore, we urge you to obtain medical clearance from your physician no earlier than the start of June to ensure your student's athletic participation is uninterrupted.

Students wishing to participate in a school activity or athletic event should be in school for a minimum of 4 classes on the day of the activity or athletic event or have an excused absence.  It will be the responsibility of the Athletic Director and coach to determine a student’s eligibility to participate in an athletic contest.  If participation requires that the athlete be excused from a class, he or she must be maintaining a satisfactory average in that class.  It is up to the teacher to make this decision.

Adding or dropping a sport, or the ending of a season, may necessitate a schedule change affecting a student's other classes and/or starting/ending time.  Students should let their guidance counselor know of any athletic plans so that the class schedule can be planned without major changes mid-semester.  Athletes who plan to compete in sports programs at the college level should be aware that NCAA regulations require certain eligibility standards including approved high school courses and SAT scores. Students should also check with their guidance counselor or the school Registrar regarding online coursework because these courses may not meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.

Individual coaches should be contacted regarding the granting of athletic letters.

Athletes certainly appreciate spectators and most school sporting events have free admission.  Those sports where admission is charged for spectators include Football ($5 with ASB card or $10 general admission) and winter sports (free with ASB card, $5 for students without an ASB card, or $10 general admission).
