Overview

BOHS recognizes that there is an underrepresentation of our Hispanic students in honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.  It is our goal to increase the number of Hispanic students moving into more challenging coursework at BOHS.  With consistent support, all students can be successful.

At the end of the first semester of the 2014-15 school year, BOHS staff identified 19 potential candidates, based on strong academic performance, teacher recommendation, and counselor input, for the Gateway Program.  These candidates were invited to move into Honors Lit/Comp 1 for the spring semester of 2014-15 with the following put into place to support their successful transition:

• Bi-monthly group support meetings with counselors, counseling interns, successful peers, and honors and/or AP teachers
• In-depth topics including effective study skills, time management, analysis of barriers to success, and school-life balance
• Organized study groups
• Grade monitoring
• Development of effective advocacy skills

Seventeen candidates accepted the invitation and opportunity to participate in the Gateway Program.  Data from the inaugural year is below.  We look forward to ensuing years of supporting student success!
