This course emphasizes improving students’ visual arts and communication skills through broadcasting as media arts. Students will perform and produce television broadcasts, commercials, interviews, and public service announcements (PSAs). Activities will also include script writing, storyboard production, product editing, time and resource management and use of video/audio equipment and editing software. Students will also explore careers in the broadcasting and entertainment industry, ethics of broadcasting, and the influence of video and media on global communications, on culture, and the role it plays in social behaviors. Culturally relevant topics and activities, real-world problems, and applications will be explored through the lens of the entertainment industry.  This course provides students the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the artistic process, including creation, presenting, producing, performing, responding, critiquing, and connecting. This course asks students to critically evaluate and effectively interact with legal, technological, systemic, and vocational contexts of media arts, considering civic values, media literacy, social media, virtual environments, and digital identity. Broadcasting 1 is UC approved as a “F” Visual and Performing Arts requirement.

BROADCASTING 2

1538

Required Prerequisite: Broadcasting 1

This course builds upon the basic concepts of Broadcasting 1. Students will create, manage, and produce the school news and entertainment broadcast known as WCTV (Wildcat Television). Students will develop advanced skills in all aspects of video production while broadening their understanding of professional media arts in terms of distribution and delivery of final products. The units of this course run in conjunction with the students’ on-going creation of WCTV episodes. Broadcasting 2 students mentor students in Broadcasting 1 to prepare them for their future responsibilities of developing and producing segments and full episodes for WCTV.  The content and topics in the class change each year based on current events and changes in technology. Broadcasting 2 is UC approved as a “F” Visual and Performing Arts requirement.
