AP Spanish Course Description:

Recommended Preparation: C or better in Spanish III

This class provides advanced students with the guidance they need to continue discovering, learning, and using the Spanish language in meaningful, creative, and engaging contexts.  In addition, this class will prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Exam. This class is meant to be comparable to fifth and sixth semester (or the equivalent) college and university courses that focus on speaking and writing in the target language at an advanced level.  All four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) will be practiced and integrated regularly in class as well as outside of class.

Grading Policy during Distance Learning

Grading will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Assignments  (40%)
  2. Tests and quizzes (30%)
  3. Projects  (20 %)
  4. Final Exam (10%)

Distance Learning rules and behavior expectations.

  1. Be on time. Attendance will be taken daily during your normally scheduled period via Zoom participation or via a Google Classroom assignment to be turned in prior to the end of that period. Your daily attendance is mandatory. You are expected to stay logged into your Zoom sessions for the entire duration of it. Downloading a bell schedule (alarms) on your device is highly recommended to not lose track of time from period to period! If the teacher is late logging on to Zoom for any reason, please do not leave the class until the teacher joins the session. It is important that your attendance is taken for that day.
  2. Come prepared with daily materials
  • Charge devices daily & log in daily at the start of class with your name.
  • Headphones (optional)
  • Have your textbook available near you for reference.
  • Paper and pen to take notes as needed.

  1. Zoom and Online Etiquette
  • Please mute your microphones unless asked to unmute them.
  • Cameras should be turned ON during the majority of our Zoom sessions, and you should be seated upright in a chair without any other distractions.
  • Please wear appropriate attire.
  • Chats should only be used to ask the teacher class/subject specific questions.
  • All participants should be respectful and considerate to their peers and teacher in all interactions and online posts.

The AP Exam:

The AP Spanish Language Exam is not based on specific course content but attempts to evaluate levels of performance in the use of the language, both in understanding written and spoken Spanish and in writing and speaking within correct and idiomatic Spanish in informal and formal modes.

Grading scale for the AP Exam.

The student who receives an AP grade of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Spanish Language Exam will have mastered—to a degree corresponding with the AP grade—the skills and knowledge required to receive credit for an advanced level (fifth and sixth semester or the equivalent) college or university Spanish language course.

At the end of the class you will:

  • Have a strong communicative ability in Spanish in the interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive modes.
  • Have a strong command of Spanish linguistic skills (including accuracy and fluency) that support communicative ability.
  • Comprehend Spanish intended for native speakers in a variety of settings, types of discourse, topics, styles, and broad regional variations.
  • Produce Spanish comprehensible to native speakers in a variety of settings, types of discourse, and topics.
  • Be able to acquire information from authentic sources in Spanish.
  • Be aware of some cultural perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world.
