Marching Band/Wind Ensemble

The Marching Band, Color Guard, and Percussion classes make up what we call the Wildcat Entertainment Corps. We are a marching band that performs at school and community events and at marching band competitions and parades during the year. Students learn a fun and challenging marching field show and perform in competition against other schools in the area as well as competing in parades. The Wildcat Entertainment Corps performs at home and away football games, band competitions, parades, during school pep-rallies, and at other school/community events. It's one of the most active groups on campus!

In the Spring/2nd Semester, Percussion and Winds continue to perform as the Wind Ensemble in Festival competitions and in school concerts.

Our primary form of communication is through the Band App:

Student Health:

Student health & safety always comes first! Students experiencing any pain or discomfort should immediately remove themselves from rehearsal and inform Mr. Charrette. ALL students are required to pass the athletic clearance prior to participating in Band Camp. Go onto this website athleticclearance.com and create an account. There you will fill out information and upload a current physical (physicals are valid for one year).

Please let Mr. Charrette know of ANY allergies, health conditions, or other pertinent health information ASAP. This includes any food allergies, pollen or contact allergies, asthma, chronic joint/muscle issues, visual or auditory impairments. Every effort will be made to accommodate students with health conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Marching Band.

Marching Band is a very physical activity and students are responsible for taking care of their own bodies to ensure their minds and bodies can function at maximum capacity. DO: get a lot of sleep & rest, drink lots of water, eat 3 healthy meals a day (especially before rehearsal!), stretch & warm up, wear sunscreen, wear ear plugs. DO NOT: stay up late, drink sugary carbonated drinks or coffee, skip meals, eat junk food/fast food, engage in strenuous physical activity.

Some of our musical instruments are extremely loud and can reach volumes of up to (or over) 100 decibels! Prolonged exposure to this level of sound will cause permanent hearing damage. Two pairs of foam earplugs WILL be available to all students, however some students might want to invest in some higher-quality ear plugs for a better listening experience. All percussionists are required to wear ear plugs during all rehearsals and performances. Other students performing in close proximity to the drum line are highly recommended to wear ear plugs as well. All students are recommended to wear earplugs in the stands during football games.

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS

Below is a list of recommended materials that will help ensure a successful and pleasurable Marching Band experience. If any students have any difficulty acquiring materials or have questions please contact Mr. Charrette. [email protected]

Attire:

For all of Band Camp, ALL students should plan on being OUTSIDE ALL DAY and should therefore dress appropriately. It will likely be VERY HOT, and the best clothing will keep the sun off of your skin and allow for air flow. Students are EXTREMELY ENCOURAGED to wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing and a light-colored, wide brimmed hat (or baseball cap).

ALL students should plan on wearing athletic shoes AND socks (Drill Master marching shoes are NOT required for camp, but should be ordered ASAP). Any ankle-high tennis shoes/sneakers/running shoes that are comfortable will be fine. Make sure your shoes are comfortable as you will be marching for hours every day. Open-toed shoes or sandals are NOT allowed.

It is also advisable to bring a light jacket just in case it gets cold (it might get cool in the evening).

Water:

It is EXTREMELY ENCOURAGED that ALL students bring a large 1/2 gallon or 1 gallon water container with them. Wearable water containers (such as CamelBak) are also encouraged. Students will be outside in the sun and heat for almost two weeks and in those conditions it’s recommended that you drink around 1 gallon of water a day. Please be responsible and stay hydrated!

Sun Protection:

The sun is the enemy! ALL students are highly encouraged to bring and continually apply a lot of sunscreen. Please apply sunscreen outside BEFORE rehearsal starts. Students are required to wear their Band Hat during Band Camp and at Full Band rehearsals.

Instruments and Music Materials:

Below is a list of materials that will help ensure a successful and pleasurable Marching Band experience. If any students have any difficulty acquiring materials or have questions please contact Mr. Charrette at [email protected]

Required Materials: Students are expected to bring to every rehearsal

  • Instrument & necessary accessories (extra reeds, oil, drumsticks, etc.)
  • Music - all students must bring a three ring binder with clear-plastic inserts so that music papers don’t get wet. It must have ALL music AND warm-ups AND drill materials. 1 printed copy will be provided & digital versions will be made available, but please print music and drill on your own whenever possible.
  • Pencil to write notes in music
  • Dot book - small spiral bound notebook (5” x 7”) for keeping marching drill locations
  • Earplugs - Mandatory for Percussion - 2 foam pairs will be provided, but highly encourage looking into higher quality earplugs. “Earasers” brand or other silicone-style musician’s ear plugs are highly recommended.
  • Band Hat - Students are issued a white band hat that they write their name on and decorate. We use them instead of boring old name tags! Students are required to wear these for the duration of Band Camp, and at all Full-Band rehearsals. Be ready for decoration contests!

Other necessary materials:

  • Chromatic Tuner
  • Metronome
  • extra valve oil, mouthpiece (brass)
  • extra cork grease, extra reeds, mouthpiece (woodwinds)
  • extra drumsticks/mallets & bag (percussion)
  • Flag bag, guard gloves, dance shoes, athletic apparel, etc. (color guard)

Suggested Instrument Equipment:

When possible, BOHS has a limited quantity of musical instruments we rent to students, but we do highly recommend that students perform with their own personal instrument when possible. Most “intermediate model” or better quality instruments with a concert-style mouthpiece and reeds are acceptable. However, as students move into the more discriminating realm of high school music where more focus can be spent on tone quality, tuning, and techniques become more advanced, it is advisable to invest in intermediate or professional-grade mouthpiece and/or horn. Any students still using the same reeds and mouthpieces they started on as beginners three or four years ago should rethink their setup. This gear prioritizes cheapness and playability over sound quality and intonation. Some advanced students may be thinking about different mouthpieces/equipment for different ensembles and the different sound qualities they require (i.e. concert v. jazz).

Upgrading to a quality mouthpiece is much more affordable than purchasing a new instrument and can be an effective way to achieve a more professional tone and tuning. I recommend the following gear:

Brass Mouthpieces:

Trumpet: Bach 5C or Bach 3C

Mellophone: Blessing 6V

Trombone: Bach 6.5 AL or Bach 5G

Baritone: Schilke 51D

Tuba: Conn Helleberg

**Brass players should be aware of your instruments’ shank size when purchasing a mouthpiece.

Woodwind Mouthpieces:

Clarinet: D'Addario Reserve X5 or Vandoren M30

Bass Clarinet: Vandoren B45

Alto Sax: Selmer Paris S80 C* or Vandoren AL3

Tenor Sax: Vandoren TL4

Bari Sax: Yamaha 5C or Vandoren BL3

**Woodwind players should have at least 3 high quality reeds available at all times. I recommend a Vandoren 3+ strength reed (or equivalent). Ligatures have less impact on overall sound quality than the mouthpiece itself, so upgrading them is not as cost effective, but consider a quality Rovner, Yamaha, or Vandoren ligature if you feel the need to upgrade.

Percussion Equipment:

For marching season, students will be provided with one pair of sticks/mallets. It is highly recommended that students purchase extra, especially Snare Drum & Tenor Drummers. Percussionists are strongly recommended to bring their own metronome and a drum key/torque wrench.

All percussionists should invest in a small stick bag (VicFirth Standard Drum Stick Bag) and fill it with at least one pair of concert drumsticks (VicFirth 5A or 5B or equivalent), one pair of yarn mallets (Balter Pro Vibe Series Rattan 23R Medium Blue Cord), and one pair of felt timpani mallets (VicFirth T1 General). Ask the Percussion instructors for more information & recommendations regarding stick and mallet preference.

Color Guard Equipment:

Students should be dressed in athletic dance attire for all rehearsals. Regular cotton T-shirts are OK (neutral colors preferred), elastic dance shorts or leggings are also required (no jeans, skirts, pants, etc.), athletic shoes/tennis shoes are required (no boots, open-toed shoes). Hair should be pinned up or out of your face for safety reasons (hair-tie, headband, etc.).

We do our best to provide as much equipment for color guard as possible, but we also highly recommend students purchase their own rifle/saber, gloves, makeup (for shows), and a flag bag. Ask the color guard instructor for more specific information regarding these materials.
